I am new to alpacas. Where do I start?
Welcome to alpaca ownership, it's a wonderful journey and we're here to help you every step of the way.
The best place to start is with good basics:

• Secure fencing and shelter
• Suitable grazing and supplementary feeding
• A relationship with a local vet
• A herd health plan

We are happy to guide you through everything so you feel confident from day one.

How many alpacas should I keep?
Alpacas are herd animals and should never be kept alone. A minimum of three is recommended so they feel safe and settled

What do alpacas eat?
Primarily grass, supported with hay or haylage when grazing is limited. Most herds also need mineral supplementation, and some require additional feed depending on age, condition and pregnancy status.

Do alpacas need vaccinations?
Yes. Vaccination is an important part of herd health, particularly against clostridial diseases. Your vaccination programme should be discussed with your vet or with us as part of your herd health planning.

How often do alpacas need worming?
There is no one size fits all answer. We recommend parasite control based on faecal egg counts rather than routine blanket worming. This helps prevent resistance and keeps your herd healthier long term.

How often do alpacas need their toenails trimmed?
Typically every two to four months, depending on ground conditions and growth rate. Overgrown nails can affect posture and movement, so regular checks are important.

Can you teach me basic alpaca handling?
Yes. Owner training is one of our most popular services. We can show you safe handling, toenail trimming, body condition scoring and what to look for when checking your animals.

How do I know if my alpaca is unwell?
Signs can be subtle. Watch for:

• Changes in appetite or behaviour
• Weight loss
• Lethargy
• Abnormal faecal pellets
• Reluctance to move or separation from the herd

Do I need special facilities?
At minimum you will need:
