Learn with The Vet Shed

Teaching the next generation of camelid vets.

We have been actively involved in the introduction of camelid medicine into the University of Harper and Keele Veterinary School. Over the last four years we have hosted approximately 500 veterinary students on site in small training groups of about 12–15 people.

These individuals are with us for around three hours, where they learn about the alpaca industry and market in the UK. We let the students handle our animals, explaining the similarities and differences between alpacas and other UK farm animals.

Students learn about the common illnesses seen in UK alpacas and leave with a good understanding of what routine husbandry measures are necessary to maintain a healthy herd.

Running these courses has become second nature to us — and they can be tailored and made available to potential new alpaca owners, current owners, vets and vet students.
